Aquarium Fish Health: White Spot Disease Signs of illness And Treatments

Fish death is one of the main problems that beginner aquarist as well as some expert aquarist face. It’s frustrating to the extent that many quit keeping aquarium fish. But fish death can be prevented. Most fish deaths are caused as a result of both an external and internal type of parasite that contend with the fish in the aquarium. As a result if you watch your aquarium fish often you will be able to discover when they have been infected by these parasites and then treat them to prevent fish death. If you do not want the hassle of coping with fish diseases but still wish to enjoy taking a look at fish take a look at these 3d moving screensavers for your personal computer!

One widespread parasite manifestation is referred to as White Spot Disease.Be aware of these White Spot disease behavioral symptoms in your fish.

- Constant laying on the bottom or hanging at the surface.

- Rubbing of the body against rocks

- Gasping at the water surface

- Simply no reaction to eating

- General dullness and lethargy

- Hovering in the corner

- Fish swimming with clamps upwards

The most typical of the visible signs is the introduction of the pin head-size white spots on the body as well as fins. This ailment is called White Spot disease and it is brought on by the parasite Ichthyophthirius Multifillis. This parasite has a free-swimming stage, which attaches itself to the fish. The most common chemical used in managing infected fishes is Methylene Blue. You could buy a one percent stock solution from a trustworthy chemist or even aquarium store and apply at .8ml to 1.0ml per gallon of water. This quantity should be added all at once. Repeat after a couple of days. Methylene Blue is harmless to young fish and unlike the general belief, it doesn’t affect plants if utilized in weaker concentration. The fishes must stay in this bath until every white spot has disappeared. A water change after therapy is necessary otherwise prolonged contact with the chemical might have an effect on the fertility of the fish.

Some advice… if you are using a side filter with activated charcoal you need to remove it to prevent the coal from absorbing the Methylene Blue. Yet another tip… during treatment you need to use artificial aeration with coarse bubbles close to the surface, since a dirty bottom would inactivate the medicament by absorption. A much better measure is to get rid of all dirt from the bottom prior to treatment.

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance

When i lived at home, my mom had one freshwater fish in a fish tank, with a few rocks . Her idea of freshwater maintenance, was to let the replacement water stand for one day. She said this was to remove the chlorine from the water. She  did  something right, for when we moved and had to give the fish away, the fish was even so alive after two and half years.

Now that was a very basic fresh water fish . With today’s exotic fish for sale in the pet stores, it is going to take more than letting water stand for a day to remove the chlorine to keep your fish healthy and more importantly happy. Things you must consider for right maintenance of your freshwater aquarium are :

1. Having proper water quality is important, but it is much more than just letting it hang around for a day . There are a lot more items to think of . You will need a test kit to rate for proper ph, water hardness, nitrates, specific gravity, etc. You will need to test the water for these properties almost everyday and make proper adjustments.

2. Proper cleaning of the gravel is important. You will need to vacuum-clean the gravel to remove food, feces and other contaminants to prevent the build up of nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. All of these contaminants are harmful to your fish.

3. You should only replace 25% of the water every week . But if you must clean the entire tank, do not use chemicals on the inside for glass cleaning, use a algae scraper instead. Even a slight amount of home cleaners is toxic to freshwater fish. You can use them on the outside of the tank, but verify you do not get any of the chemicals inside the tank.

This is just the tip of the ice burg on proper freshwater aquarium maintenance, there is much more to learn.

Getting Started with an Aquarium

There is no such thing as a “perfect” aquarium for your fish. Each aquarium will need various specifications depending on the animals you plan to keep. Oftern times this just mean having the right accessories in your aquarium.

You need to first decide what fish species you want. There are subtle differences between a salt water and fresh water aquarium, so you have to buy one that’s right for your fish. While fresh water aquariums are much more common and traditional, salt water aquariums are gaining in popularity due to people’s wanting to raise unique brands of fish, and even go so far as to include live coral in their aquarium’s decoration.

You also need to make sure you have the right size aquarium. Go online or to your local pet shop for information on aquarium sizes. You also need to decide how many fish you want to keep.

Pet stores may have a lot of fish in a single tank but thats only for display purposes. Over the long term your fish need to have enough space.

Also remember that some breeds of fish are aggressively territorial, so you’ll either want to place these fish in their own separate tanks or buy larger tanks that will keep them from fighting.

On the average, tanks should have water capacities of 20 gallons or more. You need to also keep the shape of your tank in mind. some breeds of fish prefer wide and long but relatively shallow tanks, while others prefer deeper ones.

Aside from tank size and water capacity, another important consideration for an aquarium is the filter. The filter is the heart of the tank, keeping the water clean and filled with oxygen. Wet/dry filters with pumps are the most commonly used for aquariums, and these keep the water circulating constantly. These types of filters are also low cost and easily maintainable.

UGF are also commonly used types of filters. These are more expensive, and are harder to maintain than regular wet/dry ones, but they provide a form of biological filtration which can be quite beneficial for your fish, removing harmful bacteria and even, to an extent, cleaning out small particles of algae from the water.

Full biological filters are composed of corals and other living filters grown in trays. These can be used in large tanks but or more common in ponds. Biological filters are the most efficient and natural.

This third type of filter system is probably the most appropriate for salt-water aquariums, as the differences between salt and fresh water isn’t merely the addition of “salt” per se, but various minerals. In salt tanks ammonia and nitrogen are integrated into the ecosystem. Bio filter better maintain the cycle.

A heating system is also needed to keep fish comfortable. There are some fish that are more sensitive to water temp then other species. If you plan on having tropical fish then this will need to be something you look into. However, ragardless of which fish you keep, heating systems are still important.

You can easily get started with an aquariumn kit.

Top Tips To Maintain A Fish Pond

When talking about upkeep of fish pond, a lot of people fail to look after it the right way. Nevertheless, it is no ordeal if you initiate the process on the right note from the very beginning i.e. from the stage of digging the pond in the right place and right way. Digging it at the right place can automatically cut down on maintenance hassles and the frequent headache that it gives. Do not make the mistake of digging a pond below a tree as you’ll end up spending your time and energy in keeping the pond clean of all the dirt and fallen leaves from the tree. Here are some simple upkeep tips for the same.

One easy way to maintain a pond is to use a plastic lining. This plastic lining can be of great help in separating the pond and the adjoining ground. Additionally, having this plastic lining around may prevent the unwanted entry of the soil, debris and other substances in the pond. However, make it a point to use only high quality lining as it does not wear off easily.

While you are using plastic to maintain your pond, you must make sure that you are using the right kind of plastic. There are a handful of plastic varieties that are toxic and can kill the fishes in your pond. So, ensure that you’re using a safe variety of plastic.

A very effective thing that you can do to maintain a fish pond is try to include an assortment of plants inside the pond. Different plants may serve diverse purposes, which may help in the upkeep of the pond. For instance, there are plants that are good for controlling algae growth. On the contrary, there are specific plants that work well as decorative elements. It’s also essential to include plants which are good at absorbing and retaining nutrients. These plants help in maintaining the nutrient quotient of the pond. It’s advised that you place these plants around the edges for increased nutrient absorption.

Another advantage of growing such plants along the sides is that it helps cut down on the maintenance issues. You can prevent the soil and the dirt of the edges from entering the pond by placing small rocks on the edges. Here again, avoid using any rock widely known for releasing toxic substances when in contact with water. This could lead to untimely death of animals and plants present in the pond.

Sustaining a pond is not as challenging as it might sound to be. You just have to put in some effort and be be guaranteed that your pond will stay on for a long time period.
